Metro Nashville police charged a 54-year-old man in connection with a brute attack and attempted robbery of a woman who fought back April 27 in a Donelson grocery store parking lot, police said.
Officers charged Carlos Smith with robbery.
Officers found Smith hiding at a nearby McDonald’s after the attack, according to police. He allegedly forcibly knocked a woman to the ground in a Kroger grocery store parking lot at 143 McGavock Pike at the Lebanon Pike intersection, police said.
According to an arrest warrant, the woman walked to her car in the parking lot at about 10:30 p.m. She appeared to fight back as the suspect tackled her to the ground and tried to take her purse.
The warrant said a witness at the scene told police they observed a man run up to the woman from behind and knock her to the ground. The suspect then tried to grab the woman’s purse, but she refused to give it up, the witness said.
After the scuffle, the suspect gave up and ran to the McDonald’s across the street, where officers found him hiding, according to the warrant. Smith was booked in at Metro jail.
Details did not reveal the condition of the woman or if she was an employee or a customer leaving the grocery store. The Kroger store in Donelson is usually open each day until 11 p.m.
Smith was held on a $25,000 bond.
